When we think of friends what comes to mind? Someone we enjoy being around. Someone that has similar likes and interests. A person that makes us happy. A person that is there to help us when we are weak, or struggling with something. We tend to reflect on the aspect of friendship that is happy and appeasing to us. What can we learn about friendship between Nathan and David?

2 Samuel 7: 1 - 3

  • What was David thinking ?
  • What did Nathan do?
  • Nathan and David's relationship was more than just prophet and King.

2 Samuel 7: 4 - 17

  • God - Really a house, you want me to dwell in a house?
    • Why do you think David wanted to build a house for the Lord?
      • Was he just trying to be closer to God and show Him honor?
  • Then God flips things on David
    • What does God promise David?
  • Nathan had to deliver a message from God.
    • It wasn't just a No you will not build a house, it was a No you will not build me a house, but I will bring blessings upon you and your family.

2 Samuel 7: 18 - 29

  • David Thanks God for the message that He sent Nathan to speak.
  • Have you ever had something come up with a friend where you went along with an idea. But later decided that it was a bad idea and needed to confront your friend about it?

2 Samuel 11: 14 - 27

  • David coveted Uriah's wife, and ordered him to go and fight for the kingdom were he knew he would die.
  • He was thinking about something he wanted and didn't remember all of the greatness that God had promised him.

2 Samuel 12: 1 - 12

  • Nathan is again sent by God to confront David.
  • How did he approach David about this sin?

Psalm 51

  • How did David respond

A true friend is much more than someone we enjoy spending time with, and hanging out with. Sometimes a friend has to confront one another in love. Those closest to us are not there for our enjoyment, but we are they in community and relationship with one another. God puts people together for purpose, and it is up to us to listen to Him when He speaks to us. We may be called to intervene in love with someone in order to bring healing.
